DEL117 – ? Developing Delft3D-GeoTool to predict coastal evolution under sea-level rise

Aanleiding van het project

In 2015-2018 Deltares, in collaboration with Equinor, built an open-source platform (Delft3D-GeoTool) allowing non-experts access to simulations of realistic shallow marine depositional environments. With this application, the oil & gas, geothermal and drinking water industries can improve the performance or their reservoirs (e.g. increase extraction volumes, sustainable management of reservoirs). Furthermore, this tool allows the study of the evolution of shallow marine/coastal systems under different conditions.
To date, the product can simulate prograding, river-dominated deltas. In this project develop the application of these simulations to improve statistical geological models, proving the novel use of this type of tool to potential clients. In accomplishing this, the close collaboration with Equinor is essential in creating a show-case which truly addresses the challenges of the user-community which we would like to build.
Validating the expansion of the product to include coastal systems evolving during a rising sea level expands the products application areas and therefore the potential user community is also larger. The formation of these landforms has not been simulated in this way before and will form a unique feature of our product.
An additional use of the product is as input to study deposition in shallow marine environments to improve coastal planning. The sea level rise validation study addresses a knowledge gap in understanding systems which typically form under rising sea level. In order to accomplish this, linking Delft3D with other open-source modelling software in an innovative way will also play a large role.

• Tools for applying Delft3D-GT output to improve statistical geological modelling workflows for various uses, such as fresh water availability.
• A case study to entice new users, growing the user community

Omschrijving van de activiteiten

There is currently no tool on the market which can successfully:
• simulating century-scale sediment erosion, transport and deposition for a coastal setting under a rising sea level.
• applying such simulation output to statistical geological modelling workflows
This product addresses the growing call from the industry to incorporate more computational, desk-based methodologies in their workflows, reducing cost and fully utilising advances in computational technologies.
